Human beings frequently rely on metaphorical thinking to understand abstract ideas that cannot be directly perceived through physical experience. The concept of metaphor has been extensively studied within Cognitive Linguistics, particularly through Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in their influential book Metaphors We Live By. According to this theory, abstract concepts such as time, emotion, morality, and knowledge are understood through metaphorical mappings from more concrete domains of human experience. This article explores how metaphorical conceptualization functions as a cognitive mechanism that structures human thought and language. It discusses the role of embodied experience, image schemas, and cultural influences in shaping metaphorical expressions. The paper also examines how abstract domains such as emotions, time, and social relationships are conceptualized metaphorically in everyday language and academic discourse. The findings suggest that metaphorical conceptualization is not merely a linguistic ornament but a fundamental cognitive strategy that enables individuals to organize knowledge and communicate complex ideas effectively. Understanding metaphorical conceptualization therefore provides important insights into the relationship between language, cognition, and culture.
