The files have been created for the publication "Optimal cascade hydropower representation in energy system models: Balancing accuracy and complexity" (Kiehle et al., under review). The study assesses the impact of different hydropower representations in an open-source, national-scale energy system model with imperfect foresight. The case study simulates the Oulujoki River and the Finnish energy system in 2022. Hydrological input data has been sourced from a model developed by C. K. Nakigudde.
Five setups have been created: (1) Deterministic, time series-based hydropower, (2) aggregated hydropower, (3) cascade hydropower without delay/water travel time between plants, (4) cascade with constant delay and (5) cascade with variable delay.
"ModellingFiles" are GAMS-based data files that can be used to run the scenario in Backbone or display the results. The Excel files present the input data used for modelling and can also be used to run the model. The files are primarily compatible with Backbone v3.11.

Insect herbivores cause substantial crop losses worldwide, necessitating sustainable alternatives to chemical insecticides. Cold plasma, a non-thermal ionised gas rich in reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS), has emerged as a promising technology for stimulating plant growth, improving stress tolerance, and activating defence responses without thermal damage. This review summarises the mechanisms by which cold plasma enhances plant resistance against insect herbivores through oxidative signalling, activation of antioxidant systems, regulation of phytohormone-mediated defence pathways, and induction of defence-related metabolites and enzymes, including phenolics, flavonoids, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, polyphenol oxidase, lipoxygenase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidases. It also discusses plasma-induced structural modifications and the limited but growing evidence of reduced insect performance on plasma-treated plants. Although current findings indicate enhanced plant defensive capacity through coordinated physiological and biochemical reprogramming, direct evidence remains limited. Future molecular and field studies are essential to optimise plasma-based sustainable crop protection.

Introduction. In recent years, the scientific community, together with regulatory authorities, institutions and stakeholders, joined in the common objective of changing the regulatory toxicology paradigm, moving from classical toxicological animal testing towards an exposure-driven risk assessment, based on mechanistic information derived from alternative methods, globally known as new approach methodologies (NAMs). The transition to the next generation risk assessment (NGRA) requires the collective effort of all involved actors. One approach addressing the needs of the NGRA is the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) concept. This construct describes a sequence of temporally and causally linked events at distinct levels of biological organization leading to an adverse health effect. The development, validation and implementation of AOPs at the regulatory level have become key objectives of several authorities.Methods. In this paper, the AOPs and AOP networks as applied by the European Food Safety Agency are analyzed, alongside the proposed batteries of NAMs. Results and discussion. Two case studies, (1) Parkinson’s disease and pesticide exposure, and (2) exposure to substances with endocrine-disrupting properties and the development of uterine adenocarcinoma, are described. The analysis of the entire AOP construct for each case and the assembly of the specific NAMs allowed us to identify the strengths and limitations of the AOP strategy, as well as of each proposed test. Their integration and status are assessed within the current regulatory framework.

„Open your minds to every form of beauty“ (SPRY 1947b: 159) has been the guiding principle for SPRY, her philosophy, her life, and her work. With Flower Decorations, the living pictures and her very own special field, she opens eyes for what flowers can be: beauty, an unframed picture of the surrounding landscape, a bridge between people formerly separated, a pivotal artwork in a room, a haven and strength in times of war, easily accessible, universal, bold and powerful, expression of one’s individual perception and attitude towards society and nature. Openness represents the means with which SPRY has strongly influenced England’s floristry: Neither adhering to social conventions nor clinging to technical or aesthetical standards, she detaches herself and floristry from conservative traditions. Being a woman and florist she abandons customary floristry, refines vanguard ideas, which have emerged already before, and founds her own concept of ‚Flower Decorations‘: SPRY grows into a floral artist who accredits flowers with another, a new meaning. It clearly arises in an aesthetical rejuvenation which establishs floral art or floral design, respectively, as a part of interior design and reachs out to further fields; which until today influences florists in their approach and yet refers to much more than questions of design. Constance SPRY manages to revive a branch of horticulture prior largely invisible. Owing to SPRY’s impartiality, her business acumen, her socio-critical self-conception Flower Decorations turn into her own latitude for negotiation and operation: here she can rewrite her personal story line, here she can dismantle prejudices, here she can enunciate ideas pointing the way ahead. Thereby, floristry or floral art, respectively, being closely connected with the image of women and as such hardly ever appreciated as a considerable accomplishment or skill, develops into an individual and artistic freedom of expression, a professional field. Simultaneously, Constance SPRY becomes a self-determined, independent, critical and creative female designer, initiator of a thorough and complex change transforming floristry in England and beyond that.
The circumstances in Germany, however, epitomize the outcome of a mindset which does not act according to the motto „Open your minds“ (ibid.): Stereotyping replaces open progress and leads to elimination of all opposition amongst people and their arts. Unhampered freedom of scope which has been recorded in Germany even before SPRY’s appearance is oppressed by the National Socialists‘ ideology and withdraws the groundwork which could have seen SPRY’s impact within Germany later on.
Finally, „Open your minds“ (ibid.) as a revolving way of thinking also reflects SPRY’s socially reforming and emancipatory persuasions: Her life and work, which scrutinises individual, societal and economical heteronomy, sets an example and serves as the foundation for women’s new self-image. SPRY’s achievements are opened up for all women for whom she taps new possibilities: women as floral artists can now be self-dependent female designers who are not only participating in life within private domesticity but alsp appear professionally in public. Bound to gender-specific role allocations by means of flowers but disenthraled from a perspective which devaluates femininity itself, SPRY repositions women as self-confident persons being entitled to live out individual biographies, being qualified for economical and financial independence, and as women who have – by flowers and their womanhood – the authority to communicate socially reforming, emancipatory and feminist viewpoints.
SPRY’s pioneer work which started with flowers at the bottom of a gender-specific portrayal of women, breaks through restrictive behaviour standards which are imposed on women and expands into society, economy and multidisciplinary (life) praxis while constituting a new and alternative image of women. Using flowers, SPRY opens up virtual and physical space for female florists and floral artists, and last but by no means least returns the garden to women – the garden which has originally been a workplace and home to many women but was taken away by men’s claims.
„Open your minds“ (ibid.) crystallises a timeless and universal guideline which until today activates alternative modes of thought appealing for opening up new vistas:• „Open your minds“ for impartiality and catholicity;• „Open your minds“ for integral and all-embracing perspectives;• „Open your minds“ for equality in terms of gender and (gender-specific) fields;• „Open your minds“ for individuality and self-determination;• „Open your minds“ for female and male florists and floral artists;• „Open your minds“ for flowers which are more than a measurable quantity;• „Open your minds“ (ibid.) for women whose history remains invisible but holds so much more meaning than we do know.

Endophytic fungi represent a rich yet underexploited bioresource of novel pharmaceutical compounds. In this study, untargeted metabolite profiling of endophytic fungal isolate E (Aspergillus niger), isolated from the roots of Borassus flabellifer L. (palmyra palm), was conducted using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) on a Shimadzu LCMS-8040 system equipped with a Shim-pack FC-ODS column. The chromatographic run (50 min, isocratic 90% methanol) resolved 138 peaks that were tentatively annotated as distinct chemical constituents by spectral library matching. The metabolite profile revealed considerable chemodiversity, spanning primary amino acids (glutamic acid 2.90%, valine 2.43%, alanine 1.32%), piperidine alkamides ((E)-7-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)-1-(piperidin-1-yl)hept-6-en-1-one 2.57%; (2E,4E,6E)-7-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)-1-(piperidin-1-yl)hepta-2,4,6-trien-1-one 2.15%), phenolic acids and flavonoids (naringenin 1.16%, coumestrol 0.97%, apigenin 0.90%, caffeic acid 0.85%), and sterols and triterpenoids (ergosterol 0.21%, lanosterol 0.15%, stigmasterol 0.34%, alpha-amyrin 0.31%); values are expressed as relative peak area. Many of the annotated compounds have reported antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities, which highlights isolate E as a promising candidate for bioassay-guided investigation, biotechnological exploitation, and pharmaceutical development. Confirmation of compound identities with authentic standards and high-resolution MS/MS, together with bioactivity assays, is required.
