Plato 1 was a pioneering early experiment in the use of three-dimensional multi-user virtual environments for English-language teaching. Its originality lay not simply in using a graphical virtual world, but in designing a purpose-built 3D MUVE specifically around TESOL pedagogy. It combined avatar-mediated interaction, communicative and task-based activities, authentic web resources, collaborative learning and teacher scaffolding within a shared virtual space.
Two pilot studies were conducted, including one with ten non-native learners of English. On the evidence identified so far, Plato 1 belongs to the very earliest generation of immersive CALL research and appears to be among the earliest documented empirical applications of a purpose-built 3D multi-user virtual environment specifically to TESOL. Its design also anticipated themes that would later become central to virtual-world language learning, including presence, collaboration, learner motivation, task design and the pedagogical use of avatars.
Plato 1 – The Creation of a 3D Multi-User Virtual Environment for Teaching and Learning English was originally submitted as part fulfilment of the MSc in TESOL at the University of Stirling in 2001.
This digital edition was prepared in 2026 from the surviving original material. The text, argument, terminology and conclusions have been preserved in their 2001 form. Surviving figures and records of the experimental sessions have been restored where available.
Plato 1 was developed and tested in June–July 2001. Two pilot studies were undertaken, including one on 17 July 2001 involving ten non-native learners of English.
This edition is made available as a primary source for the history of computer-assisted language learning and early three-dimensional multi-user virtual environments in TESOL.
